What to Do After a Texas Car Accident

A practical checklist for safety, documentation, medical care, insurance communication, and preserving important information.

1. Address immediate safety

Move to a safe location when possible, call emergency services when needed, and follow medical advice. Do not delay urgent care to collect evidence.

2. Document the scene

Photograph vehicle positions, damage, roadway conditions, traffic controls, visible injuries, and identifying information. Obtain witness contacts and the responding agency’s report number.

3. Organize your records

Keep a timeline, medical records, bills, repair estimates, rental receipts, insurance letters, and wage-loss documentation in one secure location.

4. Communicate carefully

Provide accurate information, but avoid guessing about fault, injuries, speed, or distances. Review releases and broad medical authorizations carefully before signing.
